I enjoyed finding the articles listed below, as they generated memories of my youth on Milwaukee's South side. You can still see the ships at Jone's Island and the Polish flats are still occupied, althought with new ethnic migrants. The last streetcar line ended long ago, to be replaced by the diesel bus.
"Undaunted by their limited incomes, Polish immigrants combine hard work, sacrifice and ingenuity to realize their dream of home ownership." "Despite persistent discrimination and segregation, African-Americans created strong institutions and a rich cultural life that remain today." "Remember the days when streetcars ruled the streets, and enormous ships transported Milwaukee exports around the world?"
